About Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, in Uttar Pradesh, is fondly referred as the gateway to the state because anyone travelling from Delhi to Uttar Pradesh passes through this city. It’s in fact a part of the National Capital Territory of Delhi in addition to serving as the administrative headquarters of an Uttar Pradesh district of the same name.

Ghaziabad is located extremely close to the Hindon River. It’s also surrounded by historic areas like Meerut in the north, Bulandshahar and Gautambudh Nagar in the south and Delhi in the southwest.

Famed as an industrial city, Ghaziabad is seeing rapid development in infrastructure. The City Mayors Foundation survey adjudged Ghaziabad as the second-fastest growing city in the world. It is also an important educational center of western Uttar Pradesh that hosts reputed institutes in management, engineering and dental studies. The city, however, has various drawbacks such as high population and high crime rate.

The city has been witnessing the construction of a large number of malls and multiplexes. Various flyovers are adding to the infrastructure growth of the city.

Stats and Facts

  • As per the provisional reports of Census 2011, the population of Ghaziabad stands at 16,36,068. The urban population, on the other hand, is 23,58,525.
  • As per the same report, the sex ratio in Ghaziabad is 882 per 1000 males and the child sex ratio is 833 per 1000 boys, both lying below the national average.
  • Average literacy rate is 93.81%.
  • Ghaziabad was founded in the year 1740 and named after its founder, Ghazi-ud-din.
  • The city is located on the famed Grand Trunk Road, 19 km east of Delhi.
  • The Advanced Level Telecommunication Training Center (ALTTC) is situated here.

The Manufacturing Industry

  • Manufacturing industry is the asset of the city since it contributes tremendously to the economy of Uttar Pradesh.
  • The steel sector is the most significant sector in the city with over 500 steel organizations employing over 25,000 people.
  • The manufacturing segment as a whole employs 53% of the non-agricultural jobs in Ghaziabad.
  • The manufacturing industry accounts for eight times the income of other industries taken together.
  • Common manufactures in the city are electroplating, vegetable oil, railway coaches, diesel engines, tapestries, paint, pottery, brace brackets, heavy chains and varnish.

  • Ghaziabad is accessible by air, rail and road.
  • The city lies at a distance of about 45 km from the Indira Gandhi International airport.
  • It is well connected by road as several people commute daily to surrounding areas like Noida, Delhi, Meerut, Bulandshahar, Haridwar and Saharanpur.
  • Several railway lines pass through the city which lies at a railway junction. Besides the Ghaziabad railway station, the city also has 5 other railway stations. Fast Moving Local Trains called EMU also help people in Ghaziabad to connect with Delhi and surrounding cities.
  • The Delhi Metro extends to regions surrounding Ghaziabad. In 2014, this line will be further extended to Old Bus Stand within the city.
  • Besides the Delhi Metro, the city’s citizens can use the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) buses to commute within the city.

Ghaziabad Civic Administration

  • Ghaziabad became a municipal corporation in the year 1994.
  • For administrative purposes, the city is divided into 5 areas namely the Kavi Nagar zone, the Vasundhara zone, the Mohan Nagar zone, the City zone and the Vijay Nagar zone.
  • Jal Nigam is the authority responsible for water supply and sewerage works in the city.

Ghaziabad Infrastructure

The infrastructure in the city is strong and the development activities are almost always in full swing, primarily, because of the city’s proximity to the national capital. The vast areas of cheap land available in the city for both residential and commercial development are also a strong encouragement for building infrastructure. The city’s development authorities have focused their attention on developing the physical and social infrastructure in the city.

Dynamic E-Governance Machinery

The need of the hour for all state machineries, ever since governance reforms took precedence, has been to introduce e-governance for its citizens. For this, a dedicated web portal is a necessity for different departments and/or agencies. The citizens of Ghaziabad, too, have access to various services online through multiple government websites.
